God Our Father - John 8:31-47
LThe Jewish leaders in this passage held fast to their claim as descendants of Abraham, a man known for his belief in God. Jesus had some tough things to say. Although they were claiming closeness with God through their tie to Abraham, it is clear from their responses and failure to recognize Jesus that they didn’t actually know God. While they were physical descendants of Abraham, Jesus pointed out that their behavior does not reflect that they are truly Abraham’s children. Jesus said, “If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did” (John 8:39b).
We may not like to admit it, but we have similarities to our parents. These similarities can be obvious –how I always wanted to wear a fanny pack like my mom when I was younger – or more intrinsic – specific personality traits we inherit from our parents. Those who know my parents and me can easily see that we are related. It makes sense. We have spent so much time together and I know them so well that I reflect on them. Our behavior reflects our upbringing and what is important to us.
Jesus recognized the same thing when He said, “You are doing the works your father did” (John 8:41). But He surprised them by saying they were descendants of the devil. That is intense, but Jesus saw their true intentions. He clearly did not see God reflected in their lives. His message is an important reminder for us in our daily lives. God is our creator and heavenly Father. In the same way that we see so much of our earthly parents in ourselves, when we recognize God as our Heavenly Father and turn to Him, we should see Him reflected in our lives. When we are daily seeking out God, His attributes will manifest in our lives through our words, actions, and being.
Reflecting on this passage, it can be difficult to hear Jesus’ message. But as a Christian, it is also a reminder: God is our Father.
